While we hope in the future to share vintage religious images from many religious traditions, this collection encompasses only the Judeo-Christian tradition, as one would expect of European and American images from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Roses are undoubtedly the most important flower in Western religious symbolism. The red rose is sometimes a symbol for the Passion, but roses both wild and cultivated are most often associated with the Virgin Mary. A perfect rose symbolizes perfect (divine) love. Lilies include the Easter lily, symbol of the Resurrection, and the Peace lily. Lilies are a traditional flower for funerals and sympathy cards. A white lily is often carried by an angel, including Gabriel at the Annunciation, and is also associated with Mary. Both the lily and the rose have long been associated with female figures in many religions, including Hera/Juno and Aphrodite/Venus in Greek and Roman mythology. Yellow and white narcissus (or daffodils) return with the Springtime. They often symbolize rebirth, renewal, and joy. (It's hard not to smile when you see them!)
