Our 2-CD set of Victorian Holiday Cards & Graphics includes hundreds of valentine postcards and other images of love, devotion, and affection!

At least since Roman times (and probably long before), February 14 or thereabouts has been associated with romantic love.  During the early Victorian era it became popular to send hand-crafted valentine cards with pictures, lace, and maybe a little verse.  During the later 19th century, with the rise of manufacturing, items such as paper lace, die cut "scraps," and commercially printed valentine postcards became available.

Popular themes were cherubs, children, ladies, couples, fairies, and flowers

Famous illustrators created designs for Valentines, as well as cards for Christmas, Easter, Halloween, July Fourth, St. Patrick's Day and other holidays.
Among the most popular today are Ellen Clapsaddle, Samuel Schmucker, and Frances Brundage, all of whom are well-represented in our compilation.

"Of my Love, the Angels in Heaven might tell."

It was once believed that the birds begin to mate on February 14.

EROS, THE GOD OF LOVE

We imagine him as a mischievous cherub, a tiny angel with bow and arrow ready to pierce our hearts.

But Cupid originated as Eros, the powerful force of passion in Greek mythology (Amor in Latin).

He was accompanied by tiny winged amoretti, messengers of love, and this became our image of him.

This painting from our Bouguereau Art CD depicts the love of Cupid (eros) and Psyche (the soul).

Psyche means both "soul" and "butterfly" in Greek ~ look closely & you can see her butterfly wings!

Eros is often described as the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and Mars, the god of strife, although the most ancient story says he was created at the beginning of time.

In psychology, Eros is the force of creativity.

To the Romans, February 14 was a festival in honor of Juno, queen of the immortals,
the goddess of women & marriage.
Juno's month was considered a lucky time for marriages!
